John Coghill

A memorial service for John Coghill of Minden was held at First United Methodist Church in Coushatta at 2 p.m. on April 6, 2012.

Interment followed in Springville Cemetery in Coushatta. John passed away on March 31. The Rev. Steven W. Fowler, assisted by the Rev. John Kavanaugh, officiated at the memorial. Vernon Love, a piper for the Scottish Society of Louisiana Hielands, led the traditional Scottish burial rites.

He was born on May 8, 1943, in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, to the late John and Margaret Campbell Coghill. Growing up on the North Sea, he naturally gravitated toward marine work. He received his education at Thurso Military Academy and later attended Thurso Technical College completing his electrical engineering degree in l963, serving a five-year apprenticeship with Industrial, Commercial and Marine applications during that time. He served in the British Merchant Marines from 1963 to 1973, worked for Stavely Electrotechnic Services, Ltd. for two years and then came to New Orleans to work for Nicor Marine, Inc. (now SEACOR Marine, Inc., formerly Acadian Marine Services, Inc.). In 1989, John formed Coghill Marine Consulting Inc. in New Orleans, serving as president and owner, providing consulting and surveying services to the marine oil and gas industry.

On May 4, 2007, SEACOR commissioned a sea-going vessel named JOHN COGHILL, the first of their vessels to be named for a living person. This vessel now provides services off the coast of Argentina.

John was an avid golfer, having acquired his skill as a lad growing up in Scotland. One of his greatest treasures was his grandfather's hand-made golf clubs which, unfortunately, he lost in Katrina several years ago. He always pointed with pride to having played at St. Andrews many times. John was a lover of all types of music. He played the piano, organ and all types of string instruments. His beloved bag pipes were also lost in Katrina.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sinclair Coghill and his sister, Sheena Begg and her husband, George.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Becky Adcock Coghill of Minden; his daughter, Jane Coghill Davison and husband, Andy; and grandson, Henrick of London, England; his brothers, Robert Coghill and Robert Sweetland of Inverness, Scotland.

He is also survived by his beloved godson, John Ethan Squires of Coushatta. In addition, his in-laws include his mother-in-law, Laurine Adcock, Steve and Linda Adcock, Debbie and Doyle Bell, Charles "Chuck" Adcock and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

At a later date, a memorial will be held at Thurso Beach on the North Sea by members of his family in Scotland.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Humane Society, First United Methodist Church of Coushatta or the charity of donor's choice.

To our brother, John, who was the best brother in the world: You have taken a slice of our hearts and our love for you will never end. Rest in peace, John, and until we meet again, God bless you and look after you. You will be sadly missed. – Robert and Bob
