Emmett F. Jones

Private services were held for Emmett Franklin Jones, Jr. who entered into eternal rest June 22, 2012. Mr. Jones first came to Minden in 1935, and except for the time of employment and military service, made it his home. During the war, he served with Patton's 3rd Army in the Infantry. Just before the end of the war in Europe, he was captured during a mission behind enemy lines. After WWII, he graduated from LSU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Huntsville, Alabama with members of the von Braun team in the design of the launch facilities for the Saturn-Five Rocket. He and his section designed the fueling system for the S-1C, the first stage of the Saturn Five Rocket. Later, at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, he worked in a Crew Systems Development group for the Apollo Command Module, and the Habitat Requirements Team for Sky Lab. After the Apollo fire, his labs developed the fire protection covering for the Space Suit. After leaving NASA, he served as a Liaison Engineer for the 8th Air Force Commander for his bases in the eastern half of the US and SAC Recovery Bases in Labrador, Greenland, Europe, Ireland, and the Middle East.

Preceding him in death were his father, the Rev. Emmett F. and mother Lillian Cathey Jones Willis, and three sisters, Lillian Williamson, Elizabeth Jones and Mary Alice Youngblood. He is survived by his wife Marion, son Emmett III and wife Linda, and three grandchildren and a special sister-in-law Nell Boersma.
