Sharon was born on June 2, 1946 to Morgan and Claudie Shaffer and grew up in the Oak Grove community south of Gibsland. She attended school and played basketball at Gibsland High School. She attended college at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches and earned a BA degree in Home Economics.
On Jan. 25, 1980, Sharon married Elwood Allen Shepherd, Sr., and they made their home in the Oak Grove community. They loved to travel around the country fishing for white perch in the Crappie Masters tournament circuit.
Sharon began her career at Louisiana Power & Light (Entergy) in 1968 and worked there until she retired in 2007. She taught countless children, homemakers and church groups how to conserve energy and to use newly-introduced small appliances such as the microwave and induction cook tops. In her final years with Entergy, she sold the company's services to businesses and subdivision developers. Even though she was retired, she remained a close friend and mentor to many fellow employees.
Sharon was a dedicated Christian and a lifetime member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church where she played the piano and served as treasurer for many, many years. In the spring of 2010, she became a member of Cross Bayou Emmaus Community. Family, friends and co-workers have often commented that she taught her world to smile. When she smiled, she glowed with the grace and beauty of Christ. She was a true reflection of the Light of Christ to everyone she met and inspired everyone around her to be a better person.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Morgan C. Shaffer; brother, Lloyd Morgan Shaffer; and brother-in-law, Elisha "Buddy" Payne.
She is survived by her mother, Claudie Lee Sanders Shaffer; husband, Elwood Allen Shepherd, Sr.; sister, Shirley Shaffer Payne; children, Tonya Striplin and her husband, Paul, Monika Locke, her husband, Lee and son Grisham, Jodie Sharum and her husband, Dennis, Cindy Lasyone, Elwood Shepherd, Jr., John Shepherd and Serena Shepherd; sister-in-law, Pabla "Vickie" Shaffer; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers will be Randy Shaffer, Rodney Shaffer, Jimmy Smith, Robert Moncrief, Eddie Permenter and Byron Williams.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Charles Hargon, the staff of the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center and Willis-Knighton Pierremont; the staff of Magnolia Home Health and the staff of Agape Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, as several family members have severe allergic reactions to flowers, cologne and perfume.
