Megan Speer's second grade class at Central Elementary experienced first- hand what it means to eat fresh vegetables that were grown in their school garden. As part of the "Eat Well Live Local" grant provided by the LSU Ag Center, the class participated in a hands on garden project, located right outside their classroom.
The innovative grant was a one- time funding for extension agents in the Northwest Region to teach nutrition and gardening to various audiences. Joan Almond, LSU Ag Center agent, and LaDonna Chreene, nutrition educator, both worked with the class. First year teacher, Megan Speer, agreed to allow her class the opportunity to "learn by doing"... the 4-H club motto.
