Season of Sadness

For most, the holiday season is a time of joy, generosity, family and friends. For many others it can be a time of stress, anxiety and depression.

"Holiday or seasonal depression is unusually deep sadness that begins around Thanksgiving and lasts through the first of the year," Licensed Professional Counselor Nancy Tracy said. "Other symptoms include irritability, guilt, low self-esteem, discouragement, loss of motivation, and poor self-image."

Sufferers can begin a feedback loop, where the depression itself becomes a source of worsened depression. According to Tracy, it is useful to recognize the depression for what it is.
