Traffic stop leads to chase

DeberryDIXIE INN — Officers from three law enforcement agencies spent most of the day and night Wednesday looking for a suspect who fled into woods along U.S. Hwy. 80 west of Dixie Inn after wrecking a stolen pickup truck just off Hatten Roberts Road.

About 9 p.m. a suspect was in custody, but it wasn't the same individual Louisiana State Police troopers, U.S. Marshals and Webster Parish deputies had been trying to locate.

Troop G Public Information Officer Matt Harris said Danny Ray McKinney, a 19-year-old from Denison, Texas, was found hiding in a small area bordered by Highway 80, Syrup Mill Road, Shreve Drive and Hatten Roberts Road.

Harris said McKinney was a surprise capture since lawmen were working under the impression they were searching only for the driver of the stolen one-ton truck.

"We didn't know there was a passenger until we found him," Harris said. "We found him in that area we've been searching all day ... just like we thought."

The chase began around 9 a.m. Wednesday when a trooper attempted to stop the pick-up truck on Interstate 20 in Bossier Parish. Harris said a check showed the truck was stolen.

IMG 5827"The suspect fled into Webster Parish on Highway 80," Harris said. "Somewhere near Dixie Inn, the driver left the highway and went into an area north of the road where he wrecked out the vehicle and fled on foot."

Harris said Thursday morning fresh K-9 units have been deployed to search for the driver, identified as 18-year-old Andrew Bon Scott DeBerry of Oklahoma.

Harris released a photo of DeBerry so residents of the area or individuals traveling through can be on the lookout.

"We want people in the area to know who we're looking for ... what he looks like," Harris said.

DeBerry of Cartwright, Okla. is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes.

"Do not approach this man," Harris advised. "Contact Louisiana State Police by dialing *LSP or 741-7411 or contact local authorities by dialing 911.

Charges against DeBerry at this time include theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated flight, Harris said. No charges against McKinney have been reported.
