A traffic stop early Friday morning ended in a chase, of sorts, when a local man unsuccessfully attempted to give a Minden police officer the runaround.
MPD Officer Chris Hammontree was attempting to get the license number of a vehicle traveling slowly on a street where several break-ins have been reported, chief of police Steve Cropper said.
"When Off. Hammontree tried to catch up with the vehicle, the driver accelerated quickly and tried to get away," Cropper said. "The vehicle ran a stop sign and sped through a residential street before stopping suddenly at the intersection of Hall Street and Hall Alley."
When the driver, 28-year-old LaCarlo Washington, emerged from the vehicle, he reportedly began walking away from the scene. The officer ordered Washington to stop, but "...the suspect began running in circles around the vehicle trying to elude arrest," Cropper said.
After a couple of laps, Washington was taken into custody despite allegedly actively resisting arrest, Cropper said.
Inside Washington's vehicle, officers found an open can and half a bottle of alcoholic beverages, Cropper said.
Washington reportedly was booked into Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on charges of violating the city's open container ordinance, flight from an officer, resisting arrest by flight, reckless operation of a vehicle and driving under suspension.
