It was just seven years ago that Jared Mourad bought a guitar off eBay for impromptu jam sessions with his best friend Matt Moseley.
Now he fronts an entire band of his name playing country music at popular venues around the Ark-La-Tex.
"I took piano for six or seven years as a kid," Mourad said. "I always wanted to learn guitar. I think I paid a hundred bucks for it and kind of taught myself with a couple of books and YouTube."
Mourad played his first gig solo at Bear's on Fairfield Avenue in Shreveport about three years ago.
"It was horrible," he said. "But the more you do it, the better you get at it. As long as I'm making progress, I'm doing good."
Since that first gig, Mourad and Moseley teamed up and since added Justin Roe, Chad Alexander and Brandon McComic.
The group plays about two gigs a month and are regulars at Strangebrew in Shreveport and CMT Crossroads at Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City.
"All of us have full time jobs," Mourad said. "That's the hardest part of being in a band is coordinating rehearsals and gigs around everyone's schedules."
The Jared Mourad Band played The Stage at Silver Star in Bossier Saturday night and drew quite a crowd from his hometown of Minden.
The group performed several original songs which will be on a soon-to-be-recorded album and a few covers.
"That was a surprise to see all of those Minden people," he said. "I have a lot of friends."
Next up, the band will perform Saturday at Southside Saloon in Keithville.
