Police say Minden woman had LSD, drug paraphernalia in purse

laura payneDrug charges have been filed against a Minden woman after the vehicle in which she was a passenger was pulled over by local police for traffic violations.

Chief of police Steve Cropper said Laura Marie Payne, 21, who lives in the 700 block of Elm Street, is being held on charges of possession of CDS Sch. I (LSD) and possession of drug paraphernalia as a result of the traffic stop last week.

"Officer Chris Hammontree noticed a vehicle driving erratically on Homer Road and got the driver stopped on Elm Street just after midnight," Cropper said. "The driver, Matthew Morehead, was detained because of a strong odor of alcohol on him."

Morehead has been charged with driving while intoxicated, second offense, and with improper lane usage, Cropper said. A second passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Jade Lena-St. John of Baton Rouge, is charged with violating the city's open container ordinance, the chief added.

Payne's arrest on the drug charges came after Morehead reportedly agreed to allow officers to search his vehicle, Cropper said.

"A bag found on the passenger side contained a marijuana pipe and smelled strongly of marijuana, so we seized the entire bag," Cropper said. "A detailed search of the bag at headquarters revealed a substance which tested positive for LSD."

Cropper said Officer Ben Allen and Sgt. Ryan Barnette aided in the investigation and arrests.
