SHONGALOO - Webster deputies are working to determine the identities of two armed men who went uninvited into a Shongaloo residence Friday and shot the homeowner.
The home invasion occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Bud Lee Road near Louisiana Highway Alternate 2.
When Billy Collins, 61, came out of the bathroom, two men stood up from behind the kitchen bar, Webster sheriff Gary Sexton said. Collins went for a gun he kept on top of the refrigerator and one of the men shot him with a small caliber handgun.
The bullet when through Collins' hand and struck him in the chest. Doctors said if the bullet had not hit his hand, it would have went into his heart and been a fatal wound, Sexton said.
The men exited out of the kitchen window they used to enter the home. Collins looked out the window to attempt to get another look at his attackers and called 911 from his cell phone. He then called his wife, who was out of town.
Collins was taken to a Shreveport hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The only items taken from the home appear to be several prescriptions which were sitting on the bar in the kitchen, Sexton said.
