A celebration of life for James "Poppa" Gavin, 68, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Mt. Sariah Baptist Church in Cotton Valley. Officiating will be Bishop J. Gregory Jones of Eden Worship Center, Shreveport. Interment will follow in Mt. Sariah Cemetery with funeral arrangements under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of Homer.
Poppa was born in Shreveport on August 13, 1946, to James and Annie Rawls Gavin and raised in Couchwood. He passed away June 2, 2014, at Minden Medical Center. He was a resident of Cotton Valley and a member of Mt. Sariah Baptist Church.
Left to cherish Poppa's memory are his adored wife of 42 years, Essie Lewis Gavin; two sons, Derwin Gavin (Gail) of Austin, Texas and Terance Gavin of Bossier City; five sisters, Elizabeth Thurmond (James) and Terri Gavin of Chicago, Ill., Resie Herbert, Gertrude Rice (Ellis) of Minden, and Carrie Gavin of Couchwood; three brothers, Leevoid Gavin (Versia), Rev. Freddie Gavin (Mary) and Onett Gavin (Doris) all of Couchwood; five grandchildren, Jariel, Haleigh, Jessica, Ashanti and Layla; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Poppa was preceded in death by his parents, James and Annie Rawls Gavin; his sister, Betty McClendon; and his brothers, Joseph, Frank, Johnny and Oscar.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Poppa will be greatly missed. We celebrate his life and loving memories until we meet again in Heaven. Until then, his family knows that he is in the presence of Jesus.
