SHREVEPORT — The Lakeside Warriors beat the rain to get their game in with Calvary Baptist on Thursday and then took it to the Cavaliers, 4-2.
"It was raining pretty hard when we left for the game," Lakeside head coach Bob Gray. "But when we got over there, they pulled the tarp and it never rained again. Our kids did everything they had to do to get the win."
Calvary scored a run in the bottom of the first and led 1-0 all the way until the sixth inning, when Lakeside scored two. The Warriors put two more on the board in the seventh. Calvary managed one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
"It was a good night and I was proud of the kids," Gray said. "We've been over there a number of times when things didn't fall in our favor, and last night they did."
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, the Warriors began their comeback.
Luke Griffith led off the inning by reaching on an error. Jake Gray sacrificed him to second and Griffith advanced to third on Thomas Lambert's double. He then scored as Chris Brantley reached on an error by Calvary's third baseman. Lambert would later score on Cameron Gray's sac fly to give the Warriors their first lead of the game.
After Cameron Gray sat the Cavaliers down without a run in the bottom of the inning, the Warriors added two more runs to their lead.
Coulson White led off the inning with a double to right field and then later scored on a balk. Cameron Corely singled and scored on an error.
Leading 4-1, the Cavaliers scored a run on a couple of walks and two groundouts, but Griffith came in to close out the final two outs and the game.
Corely pitched an excellent game, going the first 6 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and giving up two runs. Griffith got the save.
"Cameron pitched a very good ball game," Gray said. "And Luke came in at the end and did a great job. Between the two of them, they did everything to keep Calvary from scoring too much and gave us a chance for the win."
Thomas lambert led the warriors with a double and a single, and Coulson White doubled. Cameron Gray had two singles and Corely, Chase Woodall and Jake Gray all singled.
