RINGGOLD — Alcohol may have been the cause of what left a Heflin man dead after he was hit by two vehicles early Sunday morning, state police say.
At 1:45 a.m., Zachary Malham, 25, was lying in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 371 just north of Ringgold when he was hit by a 2004 Honda driven by Pamela Doyle, 52, of Heflin, according to a news release from state police.
Doyle braked and attempted to swerve to the right but was unable to avoid hitting Malham. A second vehicle, driven by Tedderick Williams, 23, of Heflin also hit Malham.
Malham was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bienville Parish Coroner's Office.
State police obtained toxicology samples from Malham and both drivers. The crash remains under investigation.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
This was the third fatal crash state police have investigated this year.
