Nelma Lee Harkness was born in Ringgold, May 11, 1916, and went into the presence of her Savior Saturday, March 8, 2014. She was 97 years old but was active until just the last few years.
She enjoyed needlework and was a seamstress for several years for some school teachers. In later years she embroidered pillowcases as a hobby.
She made and gave away more than 100 of them. She was also great with crossword puzzles. But her love was for her family and her Lord. She was saved and baptized as a child, and after marrying her husband at age 19, they joined Heflin Baptist Church where she remained a member, taught 9- through 12-year-old Sunday School for 35 years and always enjoyed telling others about the Lord.
After moving to Delaware, she attended Ogletown Baptist Church as long as she was able, and then attended North Baptist, which is located across the parking lot from the facility in which she lived. While there, she even helped to start "front row ministry" at North Baptist, which encouraged and enabled other residents to attend as well.
She is predeceased by her husband, Leon Harkness and her son, Carlos Harkness.
She is survived by two daughters, Marie Johnson of El Dorado, Ark. and Shirley Wine of Bear, Del.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Heflin Baptist Church, with interment at Bistineau Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to American Cancer Society, Vitas Hospice and Heflin Baptist Church.
