BENTON —The Lakeside High School track teams opened their 2014 season on a positive note at the Benton Invitational last weekend.
The Lakeside team took home five individual titles. The Lakeside boys scored 52 points placing sixth in the 10-team meet. The girls scored 28 points to finish seventh.
Three Lakeside athletes split the five individual titles. Chris Lewis took the boys' 100 meter title, Darryl Moore won titles in the 400 meters and the long jump, and Lady Warrior Shanae Collins took titles in the girls' long jump and 100 meters.
Lewis took the 100 meter race for the fourth straight year. Lewis' time of 10.39 is the top time in the state this year. Lewis defeated the defending 5A 100 meter champ Micah Larkins from Haughton. Lewis will next run in New York City at the National High School indoor on Saturday, March 15. He will compete against the top 60 meter runners in the nation.
Darryl Moore and Maurice Moore had outstanding starts to the season. Darryl won the long jump with a 21'3" effort. He then easily won the 400 meters in a time of 52.37.
Maurice took third in the high jump at 5'10" and fifth in the long jump at 19'5". He also took second in the 200 meters at 22.90. This was the first he had run an open 200.
Eric Green rounded out the scoring for the Warriors by finishing third in the 1600 at 4:54. Freshman Cody Robinson ran a personal best of 10:54 in the 3200 placing eighth.
Collins lead the way for the ladies scoring all 28 points. Collins won the long jump with a leap of 16' 10". The Senior Speedster won the 100 at 12.32 and took second in the 200 at 27.59.
The next action for the Lakeside teams will be at Lee Hedges Stadium in the Byrd Invitational on Saturday, March 15.
Pre-lims will begin at 10 a.m. and finals will be in the afternoon.
