OMAHA, Neb. – University of Montevallo senior and former lakeside High School Warrior Jackson Slaid has been selected to the preseason watch list for the Tino Martinez Award, which is handed out annually to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.
Slaid is joined by teammates Vinny Rodriguez and Zack Willoughby on the list.
The watch list includes 150 of the top NCAA Division II players from across the nation and the award is presented to the most outstanding player in the division at the end of the season.
The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first-round draft pick and Major League Baseball All-Star, Tino Martinez.
Nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. Omission from the initial list does not exclude additional players from future consideration.
The list will be updated with a mid-season release mid April. Semi-finalists are scheduled to be announced on May 12 with the finalists to be named on May 26.
After the finalists are named fans will be once again be invited to vote online at tinoaward.com to help determine the winner. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the DII Baseball Championship held in Cary, NC from May 24-31.
Slaid, a Sibley native, started all 54 games for the Falcons during his junior season as he posted a .329 batting average and blasted seven homers. Slaid also drove in a team-high 64 RBIs, which left him just six shy of tying the school record in the Falcons' NCAA Division II era. Slaid finished with 15 doubles and two triples and stole 13 bases in 16 attempts.
Slaid finished his junior season with a .514 slugging percentage and a .991 fielding percentage.
