About a dozen neighbors were gathered on Morrow Street Monday afternoon just across the street from what Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said “appears to be a terrible accident.”
Though the women gathered said they knew what happened, they declined to discuss the incident that left a 3-year-old girl dead just before noon.
Police received the call from 911 around 11:30 a.m. that the child had been hit by a vehicle.
Officers and EMS arrived on Morrow Street near the intersection of Bayou Avenue to find the 3-year-old girl suffering from severe trauma. Despite efforts by EMS, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation, but Cropper said at this point, it appears to be an accident with no criminal charges pending against the driver or caretaker of the child.
The driver of the truck had recently purchased the Chevy, which had large rims, Cropper said. The driver and a passenger had stopped at a home on Morrow Street during their lunch break.
While the baby-sitter was looking at the truck, apparently the child was wandering nearby. When the driver went to leave, neither he nor the passenger could see the child over the hood of the truck, Cropper said.
The driver was taken to Minden Police Department for alcohol testing, of which results were negative.
Preliminary reports suggest the child may be from Shreveport, as that was the listed address of the mother.
The father is currently incarcerated.
