Minden is known for being a small town and raising millions of dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and collecting hundreds of gifts for Civitan Santa, and at a time in need, a local man became an angel to children.
Truck driver, Wayne Washington, selflessly gave back to the less fortunate at Christmas time to help bring smiles to children's faces by passing out toys.
"Me and a couple of my home boys were talking and we started talking about what we could do to try and help," Washington said. "It started out by us wanting to help out single mothers that can't get much for their kids."
Washington and his friends, Juan Walker, Dadrian Carey, Stefonnie Williams, Victor Morris, Brittany Gill and Dontarray 'Bam Bam' Moreland, wanted to give back to others at a time when children may not get much. By pooling their money, the group and others were able to donate toys to approximately 30 children.
Children and their parents were able to enjoy snacks and games while opening their presents at the Forestry Building at Minden Fairgrounds.
"We wanted to get kids that wouldn't get too much from Christmas and I still have parents come up to me now and thank me," Washington said.
Washington said he plans to continue giving back to children in the community next Christmas as well.
