Air conditioners are disappearing into thin air, according to Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper.
"We've had a rash of commercial air conditioner thefts all over town over the last two and a half weeks," Cropper said. "We worked the eighth one Thursday morning."
Cropper said the large units are being stolen at night from businesses on East Union to Indistrial Drive.
"Three were taken from businesses on East Union, one from a car dealership and another from a sign company," he said. "These are not window units. They are the big outside units. They are cutting them loose, loading them up and taking the whole unit."
The chief said he is unaware if the units are being sold intact or scrapped.
His detectives are watching surveillance video tapes to see if there are any suspicious vehicles with something large loaded on the backs.
"Everybody has an air conditioner, so these thieves could go anywhere," Cropper said. "If anyone is seen outside a closed business doing something strange, please pick up the phone and call us."
