Minden and Webster Parish came through again for the kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Retired educator and one-man-walking-team Carleton Prothro, beat out his family team again by raising more than $7,800 for St. Jude during the 5K St. Jude Give Thanks Walk in Atlanta recently.
"Our War Eagle team that he was competing against raised more than $4,500," said Whitney Fain, Prothro's granddaughter and event coordinator. "The entire walk raised more than $230,000 for St. Jude and had 1,900 walkers in attendance."
In the friendly, family, fund-raising competition against Prothro were his granddaughter and her husband, Stephen Fain, grandson and wife, Hunt and Ivy Prothro and of course, his son, Carleton, Jr. and wife, Becky.
"I was by myself on the Minden St. Jude team," he said. "But, they can go out and recruit hundreds, they still can't beat Minden. Minden is so good – a little town with a huge heart."
Prothro said he wishes he could personally thank everyone who contributed for the kids of St. Jude and to help him beat his family. However, his list of contributors is somewhere in Atlanta.
"St. Jude will send thank-you notes, but I want everyone to know how much I appreciate their contributions," he said. "Minden is a great city."
