Minden to join Trail of Lights

Temperatures may be soaring, but the City of Minden is keeping cool with thoughts of Christmas as officials plan to add Minden to the 2011 Holiday Trail of Lights.

"We are just thrilled to be added to the list and tourism plans to support the city," said Lynn Dorsey, Executive Director of the Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau. "This could be a big boost for our area in terms of tourism."

According to Dorsey, the WPCVB will only act in support of the HTOL coming to Minden.

Pattie Odom, director of Minden Main Street/Downtown Development and Ava Morgan, City Clerk have been attending HTOL meetings for the city.

"We have been working on this for quite some time and are very excited to be added to the list of new cities that will be participating in the 2011 HTOL," Odom said. "It takes a lot of planning for something like this to happen, but it will mean a lot for our area if we are successful."

HTOL has been held for more than 10 years and originally included Natchitoches, Bossier City, Shreveport, Longview, Kilgore and Marshall.

This year, however, all Texas cities have dropped off the trail, making the trail exclusive to Louisiana. The cities will now include Pineville, Alexandria, Natchitoches, Monroe, West Monroe, Minden, Bossier City and Shreveport.

The trail is a tour of holiday lights and decorations, as well as community events that will attract visitors.

In order to make the local trail a success, Odom is asking that community members, businesses and organizations make her aware of all public holiday events that will be held in Minden from November 1 until January 1, 2012.

"We need to have this information to the HTOL planning committee by July 18," Odom said. "We know that's not a lot of time, but we can make progress with the help of the community. This event will benefit us all."
