Merry Ann Moore Johnston, a retired teacher of Clovis Unified School District, died June 3, 2013.
She taught in elementary schools for the district from 1975 to 1998. She was a resident of Fresno, California for 47 years.
She was a lifelong volunteer. For the past 13 years, she was a docent at Saguaro National Park, in Arizona. She served as park librarian, worked the visitor's desk and did interpretive work. She and her husband, together, spent many weeks working on an archaeological project that resulted in their receiving special National Park recognition.
Her greatest joys in life were her family and friends. She also loved the National Parks, her condo in Arizona travel, and quilting.
Merry grew up in Minden. After high school and business college, she went into banking, first in Shreveport and later in California.
Merry Ann married Bruce Johnston of Modesto, California in 1952 when he was in the military and stationed at Shreveport. Merry and Bruce later made their home in the San Joaquin Valley of California, where they raised their two sons, Bruce and Eric. Her husband taught and served as a dean at Fresno City College for many years.
In 1969, after her first open-heart surgery, she returned to school and earned the necessary degrees and credentials to become a teacher. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. She had additional open heart surgeries in 1977 and 1988 but recovered quickly and remained active in education.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce; sons, Bruce Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Modesto; Eric and his wife, Carmen, of Altadena; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. She leaves behind two brothers and one sister; Curtis Moore of Shreveport, Charles Moore of Lake Charles and Linda McKenzie of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church at 1343 E. Barstow Ave, Fresno, California Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 11 a.m.
Additionally, an inurnment service will be held at Acacia Cemetery on Scenic Drive in Modesto, California Monday, July 1, 2013 at 10 a.m.
