Minden High Lady Tider Carmella Specks turned in an outstanding 2012-13 basketball season, and it has now led her to an opportunity to play college basketball.
Monday, Specks signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Southern University-Shreveport this fall.
Specks picked up a number of awards at the recent Lady Tiders Awards Banquet, including the Top Free Throw Shooter, Top Three-Point Shooter, Assists Leader and Leading Scorer (17 ppg).
Specks was also named the Offensive MVP and Team MVP.
Specks made District 1-4A First Team All-District, Second Team All-Area and Parish MVP.
"We are excited that Carmela has signed with SU-Shreveport," Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown said. "Playing college basketball has always been a dream of Carmela's. It also provides her an opportunity to get a college education. From the beginning I think Carmela was comfortable with the situation at Southern. She fits into the style of play that Coach Bell likes to play. Southern plays an up tempo style of basketball and that is where Carmela's versatility will provide her an opportunity to contribute early. Along with her ability to play ball, Southern is getting a young lady that is a good student in the classroom."
"We are excited about Carmela coming to school here," SU-Shreveport head coach Jenone Bell said. "She is a versatile athlete that can help us at multiple positions. She is not only good on the court but is an excellent student in the classroom."
