Now in its seventh year, the Ramp Ministry of Sibley United Methodist Church is looking for more fish to fry.
The ministry has built approximately 130 ramps since it began and hopes to continue to provide the volunteer-made ramps to area residents in need. In order to do so, they are hosting their annual fish fry fundraiser Friday.
"We have built several (ramps) in Webster Parish," said Lori White, who coordinates the Ramp Ministry. "And when there is a need, we have gone as far north as the Arkansas state line and as far south as Coushatta. We have built over in Ruston and in Shreveport. We go where the need is."
In its beginning, the church was uncertain of the Ramp Ministry's future.
"We are a small country church," White said. "We didn't know at the time how big the need was or where the money would come from, but we felt the Lord was prompting us to do this."
The church's efforts have paid off and they have received support from other churches and patrons of the ministry by way of volunteers and donations.
"All donations and money raised from fundraisers goes toward building material," White said. "We build the ramps with volunteer labor, and the volunteers usually bring their own tools."
White said ramps are usually built on Saturday mornings and are typically completed by noon.
"We love doing this," White said. "The fellowship the volunteers share during the build and the great feeling of helping someone out makes this a great ministry to be a part of."
White said a typical ramp is 20 to 25 feet long and costs $20 a foot in supplies to build.
"When I get a call to build a ramp, I go speak with the person in need and assess the area where the ramp will go," White said. "Most of the calls for help we get come from home-health nurses, councils on aging or social workers from hospitals.
"We do not discriminate in any way," he continued. "It is based on if there is a need, and our ministry aims to fill that need."
The Fish Fry Fundraiser will be held Friday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m. Plates will be sold at Sibley United Methodist Church for $8 each.
