An explosion at a Camp Minden plant early today reportedly injured at least one person. Most Minden residents felt their homes shake around 6:20 a.m., when the explosion reportedly occurred at Goex.
According to Col. Carl Thompson, Camp Minden’s Public Affairs Officer, the explosion occurred in section G of Camp Minden inside Goex’s manufacturing facility and not in one of their bunkers (housed in section L) that store the black powder. Only section G was evacuated and a command post has been established by first responders.
“Smoke is still filtering from the explosion site,” Thompson said around 8 a.m. today. “The injured person was taken to Minden Medical Center. The extent of the injuries is unknown.”
According to reports, Goex, which produces black powder ammunition, has exploded several times in the past: July 15, 2006; one injury, Nov. 3, 2004, no injuries; Oct. 31, 2001, two injures; Jan. 25, 2000, one injury; and Nov. 5, 1998, one killed.
