Minden City Council
Chain restaurants planning to serve alcoholic beverages inside the city limits may have an easier time obtaining a liquor license after Monday's meeting of the Minden City Council.
An amendment to Ordinance 997 will allow owners living outside the state of Louisiana to obtain their license, where previously, they had to be a Louisiana resident for two years.
City Clerk Michael Fluhr said previously, the council would have granted a waiver to the restaurant.
"But the mayor said, 'what if more chain restaurants want to come here? Wouldn't it be better to change the ordinance?'" Fluhr said. "So that it what this will amendment will do."
Fluhr said the amendment will go into effect 30 days after council approval.
Another part of the ordinance will allow the state to continue levying a tax on alcoholic beverages sold in Minden.
"Then, the state sends that money to the city," Fluhr said. "From there, it goes into the general fund budget."
Other items on the council's agenda include the following:
• Hiring of Justin Scott Tyson as a police officer and Matthew Clinton Wilson as a firefighter.
• Hiring of John D. Gill, Jr. as custodian for the Minden Civic Center.
