One pulls knife on school campus

Emmanuelle_LyonsShanese_GriffinTwo local teens are in trouble with the law after taking a personal spat to a school campus.

Emmanuelle Lyons, 17, of the 800 block of Durwood, was arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon on school property (felony), two counts of aggravated assault and disturbing the peace by fighting.

Shanese Griffin, 17, of the 800 block of Woods Street was charged with battery on a school teacher (felony) and disturbing the peace by fighting.

According to Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper, Ofc. Ben Allen and Off. Tina Douglas were dispatched to a local middle school around 7:30 a.m. Friday in reference to the disturbance.

"When they arrived at the scene, they witnessed one female pulling another away from a school bus on school property," Cropper said. "Emmanuelle Lyons was holding a steak knife in her hand and as officers approached, she threw it down."

Officers interviewed witnesses at the school and reportedly learned of an altercation between Lyons and Shanese Griffin.

"A teacher and the principal got involved trying to break up the fight," said the chief. "During the altercation, the principal was allegedly struck by Griffin, who did not have a knife."

Lyons, who reportedly had the weapon, was allegedly swinging it in the presence of the principal and the teacher.

"They had to get away from her to keep from being cut," Cropper said.

Cropper said he believes the incident stemmed from a telephone conversation between the two that took place Thursday, and the girls were catching a bus at the middle school that would transport them to a local high school Friday.

"They got into an argument about something and now they're both charged with felonies," said the chief. "And they are both 17, which means they are adults in the eyes of the law."

The girls were booked at Minden Police Department and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.
