Troop G plans DWI checkpoint today

Those celebrating the weekend with alcoholic beverages in Webster Parish may wish to stay home this evening.

In an effort to combat impaired driving, Louisiana State Police Troop G plans to conduct a DWI checkpoint from approximately 10 p.m. until midnight today at an undisclosed location in Webster Parish.

"Our mission will be to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others," said Trooper Matt Harris, Public Information Officer for Troop G.

Last year, Troop G investigated 25 fatal crashes. Of those 25 crashes, 12 (48 percent) involved impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs).

"Motorists are asked to remember to designate a sober driver before traveling to any place where alcohol will be consumed," Harris said. "Drive sober or get pulled over."

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Support for this checkpoint is provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
