Luidell Carter Stephens

06-25_Carter_StephensLuidell Carter Stephens was born October 8, 1917, to the late James Terry Carter and Earnest Jones Carter. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

Her early years were spent in the Springhill community. She was a member of the Springhill C.M.E Church. Luidell married Frank Bethel Martin. To this union, her only child was born. When this marriage dissolved, she moved to Shreveport and later married Clifford Stephens.

Wanting to seek a more productive life, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she remained until 2001. Due to failing health, she finally moved to Minden to be closer to her daughter.

Luidell's church affiliations included Prosperity Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California, and she later joined Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church upon relocating to Minden.

During her employment years, she worked as a hotel maid at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California, until her retirement. Luidell enjoyed her later years with her relatives and the Meadowview family until her passing.

Luidell is preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings Canarie Whitehurst, Pecola Gilliam, Louis Carter, Elfanie Carter, Sammie Carter, Savada Roberts and Lonnie Carter.

She leaves to cherish her memory including her daughter, Ethel Rea Martin Burley (Joseph); granddaughter LaTanya W. Grigsby (Andree); great-grandchildren LaTanjorea Burley Smith (Grady) and John-Joseph "Jay" Grigsby, all of Minden; special nieces Earnestine Gutter (Andrew) of Pacifica, California and LaTrail Roberts of Los Angeles, California; nephews James W. Roberts (Betty) of San Francisco, California and Calvin R. Roberts of Los Angeles, California; Cleotis Webb and Alma Rea Whitehurst of Los Angeles, California; Cleatus C. Thomas (Clarence) and Patricia Hines of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Cheryl D. Harris of Minden, Charlie J. Carter and Sammie J. Carter (Mary) of Shreveport.

Visitation was held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday June 21, 2012 in the chapel of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Mt. Zion C.M.E. Temple in Minden. Interment followed at Springhill Cemetery in Homer.
