Former Minden student killed

photoMinden High students, faculty and graduating seniors are mourning the loss of a former classmate who died in a car accident in DeSoto Parish early Sunday.

Jacob A. Meshell, 18, currently of Stonewall, was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle accident on a rural stretch of Linwood Avenue.

Minden High School principal Robin Tucker said that while Meshell did not spend his senior year locally, he was still well-liked by his peers.

"Even after he moved, Jacob still kept close ties to the Tide family," Tucker said.

Friday was the the last day of school for seniors, but Tucker said grief counselors will be on-hand at the school over the next few days, and any graduating seniors may come back to receive help in coping with the death of a friend.

"We will be prepared in case they need us," Tucker said.

Troop G reports say around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, Meshell, who was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, was traveling south bound on Linwood Avenue north of LA Hwy 3276 when he apparently lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with an embankment and began overturning.

Meshell was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected. Reports said alcohol usage is a suspected factor.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
