Lady Knights head into playoffs

Lakeside and Doyline also make LHSAA softball playoffs

SPRINGHILL—The North Webster High School Lady Knights softball team just completed a very successful 2012 regular season, and will now look to advance in the LHSAA Class 2A playoffs, as they host District 7-2A champion Runnels High School today at 5 p.m.

The Lady Knights finished 18-9 and 5-3 in District 1-2A play in their first year together as a new school.

"We had a very good first season as a consolidated school," Lady Knights head coach Tony Mullins said. "We've got girls from Springhill, Sarepta, Shongaloo and Cotton Valley. Seems like we have been overlooked all year long."

If the Lady Knights can put together a few wins in the playoffs, they won't be overlooked for very long.

Freshman pitcher Amberlee Nix leads the Lady Knights on the mound with a 15-9 record, and fellow freshman Shannon Cessna backs her up at 2-0. Junior Alexis Kerry leads the team with a .402 batting average, sophomore Tori Cash hit .348 and sophomore Lexi baker hit .342.

Mullins is very proud of his infield defense.

"First baseman Cassie Thomas has over 100 put outs this season and only two errors," he said. "Shortstop Brooke Foster (.278 batting average) has 29 assists and 16 putouts, second baseman Lindsey Owens (.292) has 26 assists and 25 putouts and Jordan Griffin (.297) has 22 assists and 18 putouts."

The Lady Knights are the #11 seed in Class 2A and will host #22 seed Runnels today at 5 p.m. with admission being $7.

Lakeside and Doyline also make playoffs.
