Tip leads to drug arrests

Franklin_HarrisKatina_SowlsA confidential phone call to Minden Police was no April Fool's prank, and a Minden couple is spending time behind bars because of it.

Katina Sowls, 39, of the 200 block of BF Martin, is charged with possession of CDS Sch. I (marijuana) and possession of CDS Sch. III (Lortab).

Franklin Harris, 46, of 1000 block of Talton Street, was arrested for felony possession of CDS Sch. I (marijuana).

Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said the call came in to dispatch on Sunday, April 1.

"The caller gave the description of a couple of different vehicles carrying a large amount of illegal narcotics," Cropper said. "One was a gold Buick Roadmaster and a gold Lexus."

Cropper said Officer 1st Class Danny Turner was traveling down James Street and observed several people sitting in a field, playing loud music.

"Turner approached them and exited his unit," Cropper said. "He observed vehicles matching the descriptions the caller had given. He asked the owners of the vehicles to step forward.

"Harris stepped forward and said he was the owner of the Roadmaster, and Sowls indicated she owned the Lexus," Cropper said. "Officer Turner informed them of the complaint and asked if there was anything illegal in their vehicles."

Harris reportedly told Turner there was a small amount of marijuana inside the driver's door.

"With permission to search the vehicle, Turner found 2.9 ounces of marijuana in the Roadmaster," Cropper said. "He then questioned Sowls in reference to her vehicle, and she indicated she had a small amount of marijuana in her purse. That was recovered, also, as well as some Lortab."
