King’s legacy celebrates 25 years locally

This year will mark Minden's 25th annual observance of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"We want this milestone celebration to be memorable," said Fayrine Kennon-Gilbert, committee chairperson. This year's theme she continued is, "Recapturing Dr. King's Revolutionary Spirit."

Events for the celebration will begin Saturday, January 14 with a 3-on-3-basketball tournament at 1 p.m. at the Minden Recreation Complex and a MLK Oratorical Contest at 5 p.m. at the Minden Civic Center.

The basketball tournament is for girls and boys sixth through eighth grades and ages up to 15 and ninth through twelfth grades and ages up to 19. The adult divisions are male and female 20 years and up.

The $15 entry fee and forms must be turned in by Thursday, January 12. Mail entry forms and fee to MLK Celebration, 417 Martin L. King, Jr. Drive, Minden, LA 71055 or contact Fayrine Kennon-Gilbert at 377-0934 or 377-2902.

After the basketball tournament, it's off to the Minden Civic Center at 5 p.m. for the oratorical contest where participants will present an excerpt from one of Dr. King's speeches or books.

Winners of the oratorical contest will receive $25 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third place in each division.

Eligible students must be a resident of Webster Parish and in the sixth through twelfth grades. Participants must also be in attendance at the 2012 citywide MLK celebration.
