Senior sinks Junior

Elder Prothro nearly doubles son in fund-raiser

He accomplished what he set out to do. Carleton Prothro beat his son in a friendly competition and raised money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at the same time.

In November, Prothro and his son accepted an invitation from Prothro's granddaughter Whitney Prothro Fain, a St. Jude employee, to walk for St. Jude in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The total amount raised for St. Jude during the Pennsylvania walk was $68,000 with $4,700 raised by the elder Prothro alone.

When asked how his son's team fared during the walk, Prothro answered, "I just blew him out of the water. His team wasn't even in the ballpark."

The younger Prothro's team raised $2,500. "I almost doubled them and they had a team of four," Prothro said.

Participants of the walk had stickers on their backs with the inscription "I am thankful for" and a place to fill in the blank. Naturally the love for his granddaughter, Whitney, inspired Prothro to inscribe her name on his sticker.

After giving it more thought Prothro said, "I should have put Minden on mine. I am thankful for Minden and the money they give to St. Jude," he said.

Prothro is not alone in his recent walk for a cure. Members of Minden's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority participated in the St. Jude's "Give Thanks" Walk at Mall St. Vincent, Shreveport.

This group walked in honor of Minden resident Ahmad Adams, an eight-year-old cancer patient.

The opportunity for others to give to St. Jude is quickly approaching. Minden's St. Jude auction will start at noon Thursday, February 2 and will conclude Sunday, February 5 after the Super Bowl.

A donation of $100 will put participants in the drawing for this year's grand prize choice of $50,000 cash or a GMC Denali from Harper Motors.
