Lula B. Jacobs Lee

Lula_B._LeeLula B. Jacobs Lee was born July 18, 1917, the fourth child of Simon and Love Lean Jacobs. She grew up in the Red Hill and Growing Valley communities and joined Growing Valley Baptist Church as a child. She married a wonderful man, Elie Lee in 1933. She departed this life on December 23, 2011.

Lula B. loved learning and wanted more than anything to become a teacher. Due to the financial straits of her family, she did not realize her dream. One of her proudest moments was marching with her daughter to receive her high school diploma.

Although she earned meager wages as "The Help," she insisted that her children attend college. She and Elie were bursting with joy when Jack and Curtis Mae graduated from Grambling State University and Jean from Southern University. No matter their achievements, she remained the smartest member of the family.

As Elie's wife, she spent many hours taking care of family members who were in need. She cooked, cleaned, ferried, financed and counseled nieces, nephews, siblings, cousins and various friends and neighbors. To her, this was what being a Christian woman meant. She set a high standard for her children to follow.

She is survived by two daughters, Thelma (John) Burson and Ruby (Franklin) Musgrow, both of Minden; two daughter-nieces, Curtis Morgan of Houma and Daisy Givens of Oakland, California; a brother, Clyde Jacob, Sr., of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and a sister, Lena (Richard) Clay of Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Her surviving grandchildren include Deirdre (Earl) Cotton of Atlanta, Georgia, Cheryl (Russell) Gipson of Frisco, Texas, John Cedric (Janea) Burson of Irving, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; the children of her stepdaughter, Velma Floyd, Patricia Floyd, Josephine Floyd, Jacqueline Gray, Melvin Floyd, Sandi Floyd, Anthony Sanders and Melody Sanders.

Her beloved extended family included Fayrine (Verdis) Kennon-Gilbert, the children of her brothers and sisters, all the other members of the Jacobs Family, and Harmony Chapter #81 O.E.S.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 29 at 11 a.m. at Growing Valley Baptist Church, 1686 Fuller Road, in Minden with Dr. George Rice, officiating.

Services are entrusted to Kennon's Mortuary. Email condolences may be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
