Kenneth Smith, Jr., 52, and Kathy Jo Austin, 32, of 600 block of Lewisville Road have been charged with possession of CDS Sch. II (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said a third party complainant called his officers to come to a local motel because he was having a civil dispute with his wife over a vehicle.
"The complainant said his wife had the keys to his truck and the truck was at the motel and she was inside a room with the keys," Cropper said. "They had argued about the keys and he wanted them back."
Cropper said Ofc. Chris McClaran and Ofc. Joel Kendrick responded to the call after dispatch warned the complainant it was a civil matter and he requested that police talk to his wife.
"The officers knocked on the door where the complainant indicated his wife was," Cropper said. "Another male – Smith – answered the door in an aggressive manner with fists clenched. He thought the owner of the vehicle was knocking on the door."
Once Smith saw officers at the door, he reportedly told them Austin was in the bathroom having a seizure.
Cropper said the officers entered the motel room and knocked on the bathroom door.'
"Ms. Austin let them in," said the chief. "She wasn't having a seizure but as officers were talking to her, they noticed needles on the sink in bathroom."
Cropper said the officers also observed a large quantity of individually-bagged suspected methamphetamine in plain view in the motel room.
"Ms. Austin claimed she didn't know any of it was in the room, but when officers did a pat-down of her for weapons, they discovered a small clear plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine residue on her person," Cropper said. "They also found a set of scales in the room."
Smith allegedly had $3,200 in cash. Cropper said his office is taking steps to seize the cash and vehicle.
