SIBLEY — The Lakeside Warriors opened up their 2011-12 basketball season with a loss to the Haughton Buccaneers on Saturday.
"It was not a good way to start the season," Lakeside head coach Jason Gould said. "We led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, and then they out-scored us 15-13 in the second to cut into our lead at halftime."
Lakeside led 29-27 at the half, but the Bucs came out of the locker room in the third quarter and out-scored the Warriors 25-17 to take a 52-46 in the final quarter.
Lakeside took the fourth quarter 11-10, but it wasn't enough to keep Haughton from taking the 62-57 win.
"We just had too many turnovers and break downs on defense," Gould said. "We didn't make the plays when we had the chance."
The Warriors' defense had a hard time slowing down the hot-shooting Buccaneers, who made nine three-pointers in the game.
"Haughton had some real good shooters," Gould said. "They shot the ball pretty well. We didn't do a good job in stopping those shooters, and as a result of that and our turnovers, we got beat."
T.J. Carpenter led the Warriors with 22 points and Kyle Allums dropped in nine. Taurus Erving added eight points.
Lakeside will host Minden High in three games Tuesday, beginning with a junior varsity boys game at 5 p.m. Varsity girls and boys games will follow.
"We have Minden coming in on Tuesday, so we're going to try to turn the ship around in the right direction before then," Gould said.
