The FBI is warning holiday shoppers to be aware of cyber criminals who attempt to steal money and personal information from consumers who shop on-line.
Richard DesLauriers, special agent in charge of the FBI's Boston division, said shoppers should be cautious about bargain emails advertising one-day only promotions for recognized brands or websites, particularly on "Cyber Monday," the Monday after Thanksgiving when merchants offer online sales and promotions.
DesLauriers said fraudsters often use the hot items of the season to lure bargain hunters into providing credit card information.
The FBI urged shoppers to log on directly to the official websites of businesses identified in emails instead of linking to it from unsolicited emails. Shoppers should never use their Social Security numbers to make online purchases.
