It’ll be senior vs. junior in St. Jude fund-raiser
A great cause and a little family competition are taking a Minden man to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
When Carleton Prothro's granddaughter asked him to participate in the St. Jude's Give Thanks Walk in Pennsylvania he couldn't resist. His granddaughter, Whitney Prothro Fain, is employed by St. Jude in Pittsburgh.
When he discovered his son, Carleton Prothro, Jr. would also be participating it became more than a fund-raiser for an important cause – it became war.
When Prothro was asked if he wanted to beat his son in the fund-raising he said, "Oh yes! Absolutely!"
Prothro, who for many years has been a supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through Minden's annual tel-a-thon, will take Minden's message with him.
Prothro is going to wear a sweatshirt inscribed with the message "Minden Salutes America and the kids of St. Jude," and his team name is "Minden Louisiana St. Jude."
According to Prothro, there are two choices, 5k or 10k, for participants to walk. He chose the 5k or 3.5 miles, which should come easy. Prothro walks at least 3.3 miles and sometimes more than 4 miles five days a week at the Minden Recreation Department.
Prothro is quite happy that with a week left to raise funds he has already brought in more than $3,000.
The senior Prothro, who retired from the Webster Parish School System in 1995 as the coordinator of testing and evaluation, said his former students are big supporters of his challenge.
"My granddaughter said, 'Your students must really love you a lot.'"
For those interested in helping "Senior" beat "Junior" while supporting St. Jude, a Facebook page has been created and he has an official page on the walk-a-thon website where funds can be donated.
After experiencing a mishap with the official site, Prothro said, make sure when making a donation the "right" Prothro is chosen.
"Now the funny thing is Schelley Brown Francis and Charlotte Martin each sent $25 this morning (Thursday) before they really got me on the page and since my son's name is Carleton Prothro that $50 went to him," said Prothro, Sr.
"But, my granddaughter promised me I would get that money."
Prothro will leave Minden Wednesday, November 16 headed to Pittsburgh for the November 19 walk.
Supporters can donate up until November 19, according to Prothro, by going online or mailing him a check made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and he will personally deliver it.
Send any donations to Carlton Prothro, 1306 Drake Dr., Minden, LA, 71055 or go to www.givethankswalk.org and click "sponsor a participant," then choose Minden St. Jude.
