HOMER — The Lakeside Warriors hoped to get their first district win Friday night at Homer, but the Pelicans proved to be too much for the Warriors and Lakeside lost 45-12.
Lakeside is now 3-5 on the season, 0-3 in district.
“We played better than we did last week,” Lakeside head coach Terrence Quarles said. “But we just made too many mistakes. Homer is a very talented team, and they just took advantage of our mistakes and made thing happen for them.”
Chris Lewis had a highlight run for the Warriors as he scampered 45 yards for a Lakeside touchdown.
Special team mistakes hurt the Warriors early.
“We made a couple of mistakes on special teams that lead to a couple of early scores,” Quarles said. “But we’ve played well on special teams all year, in fact our special teams have led us to some wins this year. But overall we just made too many mistakes in all areas of the game. But we were able to come out in the second half and regroup. We played much better in the second half.”
A halftime talk seemed to spark the Warriors.
“We talked at halftime about not giving up,” he said. “We told them it was about how they wanted to finish, and that it wasn’t about how you start, but how you finish. And the kids responded to that with a better focus in the second half and I was proud how they played after that.”
Quarles hopes to build on that second half as they Warriors get ready for Lake Providence on Friday.
“We’ll use that as we get ready for Lake Providence this week,” he said. “We’re going to go out and give it our best.”
