Sheriff slides back into office

sextonWebster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton had no problem keeping his badge in Saturday’s election.

Unofficial returns show the two-term incumbent beat his opponent, Alton Hortman by a margin of more than 90 percent.

On election night, Sexton was determined to stay positive.

“We didn’t think it was going to be a real close election, but you never count your chickens before they hatch,” Sexton said.

He was also determined to avoid taking all the credit for his victory.

“This really speaks well of the department, and I think it means the people have confidence in our people and in the department,” he said. “This speaks well of them - not so much of me as a person. When you have good people that you surround yourself with and they do a good job the results are always good.”

With the election over, Sexton said life at the sheriff’s department will be “business as usual.”

“Now we are fixing to go right back to doing the same thing we have been doing – just trying to take care of the people of the parish,” he said.
