Hortman shoots for sheriff’s seat

After much prayer, thought, and consideration, I have decided to run for the office of Sheriff of Webster Parish.

I am a P.O.S.T. certified Law Enforcement Officer. I attended the Police Academy at Bellvue and finished 1st in my class.

I have been a Webster Parish Deputy Sheriff under a former Sheriff.

I have also been a State Probation and Parole Officer serving out of the Shreveport Office for adults.

I have served in the US Air Force for more than 4 years.

My education is as follows:

Bachelor of Science - Louisiana Tech University - Major - Mathematics

Master of Science - Louisiana Tech University - Major - Education

Master of Business Administration - American InterContinental University

I attend First Baptist Church Minden, Louisiana.

I believe it is time to bring honesty, integrity, and accountability back to the Sheriff's office.

I have been disappointed on several occasions with our current Sheriff.

1. Our current Sheriff campaigned to the fact that he would not have a Chief Deputy. Yet on the day he was sworn in, he appointed a Chief Deputy. Why were we misled?

2. He raised taxes and expanded the size of the Sheriff's Department after campaigning on the fact that the former Sheriff had too many cars and too many deputies. Why were we misled? I do not believe that expansion of government is wise or prudent in these times.

3. I believe a Deputy should be required to submit to a polygraph test if he is accused of a serious crime. It is required in most law enforcement agencies, and if I am elected, it will be required here.

4. The misuse of equipment purchased with taxpayer funds should cease. This is not only a blatant violation of the law but also a gross failure in leadership.

There are many other issues I intend to bring to light as my campaign progresses. I humbly ask for your support and vote. Alton (Al) Hortman.
