RINGGOLD-The Lakeside Warriors opened their 2011 season with a 38-30 win over Ringgold Friday night.
The Warriors played well on both sides of the ball, scoring touchdowns on both offense and defense.
"It went pretty good," Lakeside head coach Terrence Quarles said of the win. "We played much better then we did last week in the jamboree. We still made too many mistakes, but we'll work on them Monday because we really want to be ready for our first home game Friday night."
The Warriors have not started a season 2-0 in quite a while, something that is not lost on Quarles.
"It's been a while since we've been able to win our opening game of the season," he said. "And we want to keep this thing going. It would just be great to start the season 2-0."
The Warriors had big plays and play makers all over the field, and as Quarles said, "We played a a team and we won as a team." But a few Warriors stood out. Chris Lewis had three catches for 72 yards and an interception and also returned an interception for a touchdown. Jerrell Tellis had three catches for 89 and had a defensive touchdown. Quarterback Cody Poe completed seven of 11 passes for 164 yards and two scores, and also rushed 11 times for 71 yards. Defesively, Roy Doyle led the team with 13 tackles and Jacorey Lathan had 11 tackles and a sack.
Quarles hopes that his team's positive start will help fill the seats for this Friday night's home opener against Lakeview.
"We hope to see a lot of people come out and see us play Friday," he said. "We want to keep this going. We're real excited about our start, but we want this to keep going."
