The Piney Hills Louisiana Master Gardeners honored the graduating Master Gardener Class of 2013 on August 22 at First United Methodist Church of Minden with a fish dinner catered by Hugh Wood Catering. A highlight of the evening was the entertainment – graduate Dump Hatter singing "In the Garden" accompanied on the piano by his daughter and fellow graduate, Willia Hatter.
The 10 members of the Class of 2013 completed an intensive 10- week course this summer hosted by the LSU AgCenter and presented by a variety of instructors who spoke on everything from soils and botany to insects and vegetables.
With the course completed, the newly Certified Master Gardeners will begin to volunteer in a variety of projects throughout the area, the first being the Butterfly Festival in Haynesville on September 14. These 10 new volunteers are: Patricia Bates of Homer, Shirley Byrd, Trish Davidson, Betty Gartman, Judy Hathorn, Ron Hathorn and Pam Holley of Minden, Dump Hatter and Willia Hatter of Haynesville and Kenneth Sapp of Arcadia.
If you think you might like to join the Master Gardeners, a new class will be held next summer. You may contact Lee Faulk, Assistant County Agent for Webster and Claiborne parishes, at 371-1371 or 927-3110 for more information.
