It's hard not to feel just a little bit sorry for folks who didn't grow up out on the rural route. People whose boundaries were defined by concrete and traffic lights grew up missing out on some of the best eating to be had anywhere.
My brother, sister and I had the good fortune of being reared by parents who introduced us to what it really means to live off the land. Our annual spring garden produced all the peas, potatoes, corn and tomatoes et al we could eat, and then some. Mom canned and preserved or shared with neighbors the excess and everybody was well-fed and happy.
