Favorite Projects of the Civitans

One of the favorite project areas for the Minden Civitan Club is organizing events for Developmental Disable Citizens. The International Civitan has placed this type of project as very important.

Some of the Minden Citizens remember the Evergreen Special Needs School in the 60's and 70's. During this time the Minden Civitans would host a dance once a quarter for the students. Many of those early Civitan members are the parents and uncles of today's members.

When the students were placed in group homes, the Minden Civitan Club began hosting an annual Christmas Party with dinner and dancing for clients. Civitan "Rockin' Rick" Blake provides music for the dance and the guests love it. They truly make all present realize what being happy is all about.

The Minden club also loves assisting with Special Olympics in Shreveport and Bossier. We present medals and hug the winners in the track and field events. We will again participate in April.

After a 40-year-absence, the Minden Civitan Club chartered two Junior Citivan Clubs in September and October. One group is the Minden Community Junior Club. Originally chartered as a home school club, many other students at Minden High and Webster Jr. High also joined. This club worked on a Fuller Center Housing Build for their first project.

Glenbrook Junior Club is our other club. This club worked on Special Olympic bowling for their first project. Twenty-six students assisted Special Olympians with bowling by encouraging and keeping them organized. The students also assisted in handing out medals. The joy on the students faces was heart warming.

We hope that these students will develop a love for serving their community and helping others.

Janis Bryan is a member of the Minden Civitan Club.
