Doyline kids play catch-up

As of Tuesday, January 8, students at Doyline School will end their days later than usual.

"The school day will start at 7:40 a.m. and end at 3:18 p.m.," said Grady Smith, principal. "We are adding four days worth of minutes, and we will extend the school year one day."

Students were out of school December 3 through December 7 due to the clean up of M6, a smokeless powder, improperly stored at Camp Minden by Explo Systems, Inc. Close to six million pounds so far has been moved.

The evacuation caused residents an inconvenience and students to move extracurricular activities to other locations.

Steve Dozier, Webster Parish School Board Superintendent, spoke with the Department of Education to see if they were able to waive the days missed.

"We have to meet the legislative requirements of minutes per year," said Dozier. "With just simply waiving the days, we would not meet the minimum of requirement of minutes, so we have to do this."

Implementation of the extended time will continue until the end of the school year. The last day of school for Doyline students will be May 21.
