A Mere Pittance

When is the last time you heard a sermon on the concept of tithing, the paying of one tenth of your income for the support of the ministry? According to Malachi 3:8, withholding tithe is robbery! "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?

In tithes and offerings." You see, "The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein" Psalm 24:1. Everything belongs to God. Of all to which we as stewards have access, only one tenth are we asked to return to God. When the Lord established tithing, it was meant to be a blessing in multiple ways; it reminds the giver that nothing is ours, we are dependent on God for everything, it supports the ministry, and it cultivates in us a trust in the One who promises to provide for all our needs.

Now consider what we receive from Christ. Our daily needs are met. "Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? . . for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" Matthew 6:31-33. In Christ we have "the forgiveness of sins" Ephesians 1:7. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law" Galatians 3:13. Without these gifts, we'd all be lost. "Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52. New bodies at the resurrection, that's worth waiting for, but there's more! "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" Revelation 21:4. But the wonder of wonders to be found in the kingdom prepared for us is that "the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it!" Revelation 22:3.

When we consider all that Jesus has done and is doing for us, by comparison, our tithe is a mere pittance. Take joy in returning the tithe to our great Provider, and while you're in the process, revel in the privilege of adding an offering of gratitude.
