God’s Basics

Sometimes it seems, in this sophisticated age of learning, that simple Bible answers for Christ like living are hidden under a complexity of theological jargon.

I was musing on this and my thoughts turned to the refreshing words of Micah 6:8. "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

This counsel is so straightforward yet far reaching. Imagine if all truly followed these directives.

There would be no partiality shown. Fairness and concern for others would replace all self interest. In fact, considering others needs first would be universal.

Humility before God would mean a wholesale choice to follow His directives. What a different world this would be!

I think of Micah 6:8 as one of God's basic summary statements – a condensed directive. Let's consider a couple more of God's basics. After having studied and experienced all he could find to sample of this world's philosophies and ways, the wise man's conclusion of what's important is found in Ecclesiastes 12:13.

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." God's commandments simply show His character of agape love in its application to all aspects of life, so those who choose a relationship with God will regard His law as a delight. There will be no superficial check list living but rather a growing intimacy and understanding of God as we allow the molding of our characters after His.

For the one that questions "but isn't obedience to the law legalistic?" the answer is based on ones view of God's character.

It certainly is legalism if one believes that God offers salvation as an exchange for our obedience. Self is then the one depended upon. But the true believer sees God as their all in all. Accepting the gift of salvation one's desire is to be like their Savior.

Obedience is the fruit of that saving relationship. Deuteronomy 10:12, 13 will be seen lived out in the life.

"What doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?"

Stick to God's basics.
