St. Jude auction tops million $$ mark for 2nd consecutive year
If there was ever any question about whether the 2013 Minden St. Jude Auction would meet last year's million dollar mark, those doubts flew out the window Sunday night when the local community's fund-raising efforts amassed more than $1.1 million, blowing past last year's total by more than $40,000.
"This is truly amazing," said St. Jude Children's Research Hospital representative Bonne McCalmont, who was experiencing Minden's auction for the first time. "It's unbelievable how much support this community shows St. Jude. To come together and raise more than a million dollars for St. Jude for the second year in a row is just nothing short of incredible."
McCalmont reiterated that Minden continues to be the highest fund-raising city per capita for St. Jude.
"No other communities across the country do what you do," she said. "I am in awe of what you all are able to accomplish."
St. Jude volunteer Mike Harper agreed.
"It blows away the people in Memphis, what we do here," he said.
The grand prize, a 2013 GMC Denali was driven home by Andrew Hodge of Shreveport. Cora Lou Robinson's painting honoring the Minden Fire Department will hang on Lou Snook's wall, while the school house, built by the department and honoring Robinson, found a new home with Carson Whitehead.
